It is with great sadness that we have to say all events for Jimmy for the coming year have to be cancelled. As you must know by now, he suffered a severe stroke on Sunday morning. He is now tentatively on the mend but even if progress continues without further problems, it is with a heavy heart that I have to say his public appearances are probably behind him.
He was and still is the most prolific goalscorer in top level league football in history. No one in the top five European leagues have scored more than Jimmy’s 366 league goals. After retiring, he went on to be the most loved and irreverent TV football presenter in English television history. When that career came to an end he reinvented himself as the best football after dinner speaker on the circuit. In another life , he could have been a top comedian.
In addition to the above named qualities, he is a marvellous person, in twenty years of working with him, I have never seen him treat our guests and his fans with anything except extreme courtesy and good humour. Personally as a sixty year old man, who was obsessed with Jimmy Greaves as a kid, I have gone on to have the honour to represent him and appear with him in theatres all over the UK. I’m proud to say he is my friend and that I have laughed with Jim and shared the deepest conversations as well.
He is a fighter, and I urge you to have good thoughts for him in this, his biggest fight. We have now had approaching 50,000 messages of support and I think that’s a mark of how much he is loved all over the UK and further afield. Thanks everyone who has responded on twitter @jimmy_greaves or on our JimmyGreaves.net Facebook page. He is worth the effort. I don’t pray personally but with all my heart I wish for a good recovery for this lovely man and when all is said and done, one of the true greats and a genius of English football.
